Request for Renaming a Street in US as Dalai Lama Avenue

A request has been submitted to the local authorities of a city in the Northern California to rename a street as the ‘Dalai Lama Avenue’. While the name change request has been well received by the local Recreation and Parks Commission, the final decision for the approval of the name change will come next week from the council members.

The Tibetan Association of Northern California (TANC) has officially submitted their request to the city officials to rename a part of the Richmond Street as the ‘Dalai Lama Avenue’. The purpose of the rename is aimed at recognizing the world renowned, Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

“The Tibetan Association of Northern California (TANC) has requested that the city rename a roughly one-block stretch where it is headquartered — on Huntington Avenue between Columbia Avenue and San Joaquin Street — after the world-famous spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism.” said the report in Richmond Standard.

The new street name would specifically recognize the 14th Dalai Lama, leader of six million Tibetans and recipient of hundreds of awards for his promotion of global peace and compassion, from honorary doctorates to the Nobel Peace Prize, according to city documents, explained the report. On July 16, the Richmond council declared July 6 “Dalai Lama Day” to honor his 84th birthday.

According to the Mayor of the city, the application for the rename is very strong. Along with the formal request, it contains a signed list of almost all the residents of the street support the proposition.
